Hurricane Proof Houses

Mott third grade students were given an assignment to design and build a house that could withstand hurricane forces. This STEM project fits in with their reading and science units.

All of the third grade classes in Mott Elementary School made hurricane proof houses from objects they found at home. These included objects such as old shoe boxes, coffee containers, popsicle sticks, balls, etc....
Hurricane forces include winds of over 74 miles per hour and ocean surge (Wind pushing the ocean much higher than usual causing strong waves to rise up over normally dry land). The homes had to be designed to withstand these powerful wind and water forces.
