Homegrown Leadership: How Nadia Ramcharan’s TPS Roots Shaped Her Path
Meet Nadia Ramcharan, a proud graduate of Trenton Public School District, Class of 2000. Nadia's educational journey began in Trenton at Hedgpeth/Williams (Jr. 2) before she transitioned to Trenton Central High School. Although she joined the district in 8th grade, the sense of community and connection she found in TPS shaped her formative years.
Teachers Who Made a Difference
Reflecting on her time at TPS, Nadia credits several educators who left a lasting impact on her life. Ms. Greta Frohbieter, her compassionate math teacher, always checked in, offering support and understanding while her parents were abroad. Mr. Ted Plunkett, one of her biggest cheerleaders, not only helped her express herself through music but also personally drove her to Mercer County Community College to ensure she registered for her first class. Sharon Grady’s unwavering support also played a significant role in her success.
School Memories
Nadia’s favorite memories from high school revolve around Sports Night and her time in the band. Through these activities a deep sense of community, teamwork, and belonging were fostered—elements that remain with her to this day. After graduation, she found herself missing the school community that had become like family.
Career Journey, Impact and Skills for Success
Today, Nadia serves as a principal in Trenton at Jefferson Intermediate School and a professor at Rutgers University. Her career in education was sparked by a summer camp experience introduced by Mr. Plunkett, where she discovered her passion for working with children. From a 1:1 aide to a paraprofessional, teacher, vice principal, and now principal, each role has helped shape her growth as a leader and deepened her commitment to making a difference.
Nadia emphasizes the importance to build meaningful relationships, a visionary mindset, a deep commitment to servant leadership, the power to empower others, and strong organizational skills. These qualities have allowed her to inspire, lead, and create lasting change in my educational community.
Facing Challenges with Resilience
When asked about challenges she has faced while navigating her career:
"As a young woman in educational leadership, I have faced challenges in representation, breaking stereotypes, and earning credibility in a field where diversity in leadership is still growing. Beyond personal barriers, the industry itself grapples with educational inequities, evolving student needs, and limited resources. Despite these challenges, my commitment to servant leadership, empowerment, and fostering strong school-community relationships continues to fuel my growth and drive meaningful change."
She also shares practical advice for gaining valuable experience:
"I highly recommend looking for jobs or internships that give you hands-on experience and help you develop important skills. Whether it's tutoring, mentoring, working as an assistant, or volunteering in a community role, these experiences can be valuable in any career. Internships in different industries can also provide great insights into leadership and real-world work. The most important thing is to find opportunities that align with your interests and passions, whether they’re in education, business, healthcare, technology, or any other field. Exploring what excites you will help you grow both personally and professionally."
Advice for Current Students
Nadia encourages students to pursue their goals with determination:
"Believe in yourself and your dreams—your potential is limitless. Never let your current circumstances define your future, and don’t allow obstacles to deter you from your goals. You are made of greatness—embrace it, own it, and pursue your path with and determination. With hard work, anything is possible!"
Life Beyond Work
When she's not leading in the field of education, Nadia enjoys quality time with her family. She and her supportive husband share the joy of raising their daughters, Natasha and Nicole, and proudly celebrate her stepson Allan Jr., who is serving in the Marines. Their love and support inspires her every day, and she is grateful for the strength and balance they bring to her life.
Words of Wisdom and Final Thoughts
To those considering a career in education, Nadia offers this advice:
"Lead with purpose, build meaningful relationships, and stay committed to lifelong learning. Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth, remain adaptable to change, and never underestimate the power of mentorship. As a woman in leadership, I’ve learned that breaking barriers requires confidence, resilience, and a strong support system. Most importantly, always remember why you started, your passion for making a difference will be your greatest motivator."
