Alumni Spotlight: Raamiah Bethea

Building Character, Community, and Champions

Raamiah “Ray” Bethea is a proud graduate of Trenton High School’s West Campus and an inspiring example of how dedication, discipline, and community spirit can shape a meaningful career. Though he joined Trenton Public Schools during high school, his time at West Campus helped define the leader he is today.

School Days in Trenton

During his time at Trenton High, Ray was deeply influenced by his teacher, Mr. Pandolfini, who taught with energy and care, creating an engaging environment where students wanted to learn. One of Ray’s favorite memories was being part of The Brothers of West Campus, a group of young men focused on service, leadership, and mutual encouragement. The experience taught him the power of brotherhood and teamwork, values that continue to guide him today.

After graduation, Ray looked back with gratitude, thankful for the lessons, friendships, and memories he carried from West Campus.

A Passion for Learning and Leading

Ray continued his education at the University of Pennsylvania, earning a B.A. in Sociology in 2016, followed by a Master’s in Education from the University of Virginia in 2017. His favorite classes in high school, Health/PE and History, sparked his interest in personal growth, wellness, and leadership.

While at Trenton High, Ray was involved in wrestling, the Brothers of West Campus, and the National Honor Society. These experiences helped him develop discipline, persistence, and creativity, skills that would later guide his path both personally and professionally.

A Career Rooted in Purpose

Today, Ray serves as the Director of Operations for the Trenton Youth Wrestling and Learning Center, where he combines his passion for athletics, education, and youth empowerment. His career has been dynamic, beginning in nonprofit work, branching into media production, and eventually bringing him back to the nonprofit world where he says he truly belongs.

Throughout his journey, teamwork and relationship-building have been key to his success. He is quick to point out that while the work is fulfilling, it also comes with challenges, particularly around maintaining funding to support critical community programs. Still, his sense of purpose keeps him grounded.

Wisdom for the Next Generation

Ray’s advice to others entering the nonprofit or education world is simple:
“Always remember your why. There will be difficult seasons, but never forget the reason you started or the impact you’re making on others.”

To students, his message is equally powerful:
“Keep an open mind and learn as much as you can. You never know which skills you’ll need. Build meaningful relationships with your teachers and classmates; they’ll matter more than you think.”

And when it comes to life beyond school, Ray shares this perspective:
“True kindness is rare. People may take advantage of your kindness. Be kind anyway. It will take you far.”

Words to Live By

“Do what you love and stay true to your purpose. Every challenge is an opportunity to grow, and every act of kindness makes an impact. Success isn’t just about achievement; it’s about the difference you make in the lives of others.”
