World Language, K-6
The World Language Department for elementary schools aims to expose all elementary school students to authentic and meaningful language and cultural learning experiences. These experiences are aligned to the New Jersey Student and Learning Standards while also fostering students’ appreciation for cultural and linguistic diversity. Students learn the target language in an immersion setting which provides a language-rich environment where vocabulary, grammar, and culture are presented in context. Students are engaged in learning activities and assessments that are geared towards the three modes of communication in order to develop students’ reading, listening, speaking, and writing skills in the target language.
World Language, 7-12
All students taking a world language course in the Trenton Public Schools will be able to use it in addition to English to engage in meaningful conversation, to understand and interpret spoken and written language, and to present information, concepts, and ideas while also gaining an understanding of the perspectives of other cultures. It is expected that through language study, students will make connections with other content areas, compare the language and culture studied with their own, and participate in home and global communities. Trenton Public Schools offer courses in French, Spanish, and Chinese in the following schools:
All 7-8 Middle Schools (Dunn, MLK, Holland): Spanish
Daylight/Twilight (9-12): Spanish
Trenton Ninth Grade Academy (TNGA): Spanish
Trenton Central High School (10-12): French, Spanish and Chinese
